Elderly Woman’s Fight to Stay in Her Home – A Daughter’s Desperate Plea for Compassion

I’m fighting desperately to protect my frail, elderly mum from losing her home of over 30 years. My mum, Maureen Brum, weighs just 5 stone 5 lb, and that’s because the anxiety and stress of this entire situation have taken such a devastating toll on her health. She’s lost so much weight from the overwhelming pressure and constant fear of losing her home.

She’s incredibly vulnerable, struggling with severe anxiety, short-term memory issues, low blood pressure, and constant head and hand tremors. Her GP has made it painfully clear that moving her would be seriously harmful to her health. But Notting Hill Genesis insists she has to downsize to keep her tenancy, making decisions based on policies and box-ticking rather than her very real and urgent medical needs.

She doesn’t even live alone. Her grandson lives with her to help care for her, and they only under-occupy by one small box room. But that doesn’t seem to matter. To them, it feels like she’s just another number on a spreadsheet, not a human being who has worked hard her whole life and just wants to feel safe in her own home.

My mum has been working six days a week and paying full rent and council tax since my brother passed away in May 2021. She’s done everything right. But when she applied for tenancy succession, NHG rejected her application, claiming she hadn’t provided proof of living there during a specific period – a period they never even asked for until much later in the process.

Now they’ve offered her a discretionary tenancy, but only if she moves to a smaller property. But her health is so fragile that moving could genuinely be life-threatening. It feels like no one is actually listening, and the decisions are being made based on ticking boxes instead of looking at the devastating impact this is having on her health and well-being.

I have an army of beautiful earth angels supporting me, and I’m so grateful for each and every one of them. But it feels like every organization and professional I’ve approached just isn’t too bothered. That’s how it seems. It feels like I’m screaming into an abyss, and no one is truly listening.

I've set up a GoFundMe to help ease my mum’s financial burden during this nightmare. Her petition already has over 50,000 signatures, which shows just how many people see the injustice happening here.

Please, if you can, support us and share our story. Every bit of help means more than I can put into words.
